Prof P.K Usman

" A teacher takes a hand ,opens a mind and touches a heart "

Prof P.K Usman was kind, simple & loving and also loud and tough. The 5 words (kind, simple ,loving , loud and tough) are so different and yet best describes him.he gave a new meaning to these 5 words with one word – passionate. That was Prof P.K Usman for us. Knowing him and learning under him was an unforgettable experience . Prof P.K. Usman was an enigma who strode like a colossus in his own rustic way, lighting the life of many who came to him with deformity or disease . He was a like messiah of God who came to deliver them from their afflictions. He was compassion personified. For him it did not matter the status of his patients but helping the suffering mattered. The art of concern & care for the patient were the virtues he instilled in most of us. He was a great teacher and his bedside teaching and ward rounds was truly enlightening . We learnt those pearls of wisdom as he drilled in to us some great learning that have remained an essential part of our growing in to good surgeons.

How can i forget my last surgery before our MS exams. It was a Putti-platt surgery and he washed as my assistant and asked me to operate . Not once did he shout at me nor took the scalpel out of my hand but gently nudged me to complete the surgery. He was a patient , called me muff a few times along with necessary encouragement . Once the surgery was over – he said – You have got your MS degree. Actually that got me more elated than getting through the Final examination. What put Dr Usman unique was his unmatched level of kindness, a true loving spirit and the heart of an angel. We all saw something special in him because he made us all feel like he saw something special in all of us He liked me for all the wrong reason. He assumed my so called notoriety and always spoke about it at great length. This was followed by his laughter that was truly infectious and spread to everyone.I did not mind it because he said it out of affection and with loving heart. He had no pretensions of any style ,nor was he ever pompous. He was simply down to earth and cared for his patients and his students.

But . . . no matter how skillful a teacher he was . . . no matter how patient and how kind he was with us as post graduates . . . no matter how much energy he put into making us good clinicians ,we could possibly be . . . and no matter how much he loved this artful craft that he so tirelessly and expertly taught to so many of us . . . Dr Usman remained unassuming and simple . He touched many of our hearts in very special ways that we can never, ever accurately or fully explain with these Earthly written words . . .. Sir , you are in our hearts and there you will remain , to walk with us and guide us through our lives

Prof P.K.Usman was indeed … and will always be … timeless icon in our life
